For this chapter I had to dig into ancient myths and legends of China for hours before I could make out a certain conversation between this mother and daughter duo. Since it was kind of hard to quote the exact words of that particular dialogue so I have taken some liberty with the text to make it a bit more understandable for the readers. After six hours of researching and reading about the Chinese mythology, finally here comes chapter 4.1
My mother took the marriage certificate, just waved it and complained: "young child, how can you casually take away someone else’s marriage certificate... If you also have one yourself, then....” suddenly she fell silent..
I bowed my head down, afraid to look at her…..
One second, two seconds ... ..
Old mother has still not shown any reaction, so I gently lifted her head to check her acupuncture point, whether or not she was conscious.
Nerves of an elderly surely cannot be compared to young people, finally slowly struck her pale neck.
When I looked up, I saw the red paper that she was holding, trembling, Each and every cell in her body seemed to shiver.
The good old woman was my real mother, so out of filial piety I pulled her hand, worriedly asked: “Mom you don’t have to be too much happy about it?”
Old mother ultimately reacted, throwing the red paper held in her hand directly over my head, roared fiercely: “I am not your mother!”
I picked the marriage certificate, went over, pointing to the pictures in the certificate, in an extremely flattering tone said: “mom, you see, this is your daughter, this your son in law, did you not always want me to marry out?”
Old mother caught my hand; all of a sudden tears started streaming down. I always felt amazed at the sight of her tears, how could they come so out freely…..falling immediately at will.
Now tugging at my sleeve old mother wiped her tears, sobbed and said: "But why you neither informed nor herald, had just hurried to register the marriage? Also tell your mother mother ..... "
I patted her back to comfort her: "I was going to give you a nice surprise, huh?"
My mother’s ability to accept and adapt, among people of her age, was considered excellent, at this moment, her eyes brimmed with tears; she again snatched the marriage certificate to look at Jiang Li’s picture for a moment.
Then old mother asked: "how tall is he? What is his occupation? What kind of car does he drive? Does he have his own house? "
I stared at my mother, very seriously said: "Mother, in fact He Zhi is your real daughter, right?”
They even asked the same questions.
My mother slapped my head, said impatiently: "What nonsense is this, quickly answer my question!"
I just repeated what I said to He Zhi during the day and told my mother the same.
She observed the handsome face of Jiang Li, muttered to self: "could be a cheat, right?"
God, He Zhi was certainly her daughter!!!
I controlled my urge to run away, clinging to my mother’s sleeves like a baby, said: "Mom, rest assured, if he is really cheat, then he is a decent cheat." Showing a good status was tiring.
My mother nodded, seemed to agree with my opinion: "But his qualification is so good, why would he fancy you?"
Me: "......."
Me: "Mom, do you and I need to get paternity test done?"
My mother was still distracted so she did not hear my extremely constructive proposal. She stroked my marriage certificate, in a misty tone said: "My child, I am still not able to accept this."
I was playing with her hands, asked: "how come so? I sought such a good son in law for you mom, you are still not satisfied"
"No," the old woman's voice was alarmed, "I just think that why does this story developed too suddenly?”
"Mom, you see, in fact feelings can be fostered like, legendary diamond Kings*, governors of the four continents, so difficult to thwart, finally caught one by one by the evil spirits because they did not hurry to strike first. So we did not even have a sip of ribs soup!” I vividly explained to my mother.
* T/N: referring to Chin-kang (diamond kings), who perished due to a stealthy attack by Yang Chien.
So, Guan Yan basically wanted to say that she took action first in order to avoid losing something good.
My mom deeply sighed and said: “I did not think that you could be so enlightened."
Me: "That, Ugh, ha ha ha ha ...."
My mother directly ignored my speechlessness and muttered: "But, how can you turn the talk about my darling son in law to ribs soup instead?”
Your, darling, son in law?
